Striking Japanese & Geometric Backpiece Tattoos Victoria BC

The Power of Backpiece Tattoos

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of creating a growing number of backpiece tattoos for clients here in Victoria BC. The back is one of the most powerful and striking canvases for a tattoo artist to work on. Unlike sleeves or other areas of the body that twist and curve, a backpiece offers a wide, uninterrupted surface—making it an incredible place to showcase either a single large-scale design or a collection of interconnected tattoos.

Many clients at my tattoo shop in Victoria choose one bold subject to span the entire back, while others prefer multiple smaller images that together tell a larger story. Whether ornamental or narrative, a backpiece always makes an unforgettable statement.

Japanese Backpiece Tattoos in Victoria BC

One of my greatest passions as a tattoo artist has always been Japanese tattoos. Drawing inspiration from mythological figures, folklore, and symbolic motifs, these pieces often feature flowing backgrounds of wind, water, or cloud, along with elements such as flowers, waves, or animals. The background itself plays a critical role in the movement and impact of the tattoo, giving each backpiece rhythm and flow that looks striking even from a distance.

My journey into tattooing began with Japanese art. After studying printmaking and woodblock techniques, I was deeply inspired by Ukiyo-e imagery, which bridges the worlds of fine art and tattooing. Living in Taiwan, I was fortunate to be influenced by master tattoo artist Diau-An, which further shaped my appreciation for the rich tradition and symbolism of Japanese tattoos. Nearly two decades later, I continue to find meaning and creative fulfillment in bringing these timeless designs to life for my clients.

Geometric & Mandala Tattoos on Vancouver Island

In addition to Japanese styles, I’ve also developed a deep connection with geometric tattoos and mandala-inspired backpieces. These designs often incorporate bold shapes, intricate patterns, and symmetrical forms that flow seamlessly with the body’s natural structure. Over the years, what began as a few geometric projects has grown into one of my primary areas of focus as a tattoo artist in Victoria BC. These bold, clean designs are built to stand the test of time and remain as impactful years later as they are on the day they’re completed.
